Don't Be Ashamed of the Scars .... Domestic Abuse

Don't be ashamed of the scars.
PLEASE SUPPORT: Everybody (especially my comedian friends) knows how much I love to laugh and I totally RESPECT anyone brave enough to stand in front of a group of strangers (especially drunk strangers ... lol) and make them laugh! It's not easy being funny all the time (because everybody has good and bad days) but comedians make us laugh anyway ..... even when they're struggling inside with their... own issues.

Yet there are people who fail to realize that comedians aren't just 'funny-as-hell' but also caring and compassionate with hearts of gold. (Get out your box of Kleenex, folks .... here goes): I've been helping a young woman with small children (who lives in a family shelter) try to get her life back on track (after a traumatic violent domestic experience). I've posted updates (withholding her identity because of confidentiality concerns and fear) and have received much response and continued support ..... from many of my comedian friends. (Get your Kleenex ready): A beautiful and multi-talented young lady named Ai Sha A has organized a charity comedy show to help raise funds so the woman and her children can move into their own apartment.

And offering support to the event (and a cause to raise awareness about domestic abuse) is the legendary king of Canadian comedy, the amazing Kenny Robinson. Also included in this 'pool of laugher for a good cause' is the hilarious and talented Dave Merheje. Wait .... now get another Kleenex because I realize that such kindness and compassionate is, no doubt, bringing tears to your eyes. Also offering his support is a young man with a wonderful smile and a huge sense-of-humour, the talented Joshua Elijah; and lastly two of Canada's beautiful & hilarious female comedians (whose names you should already know): Kate Davis and Precious Chong.

The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, February 27th at 7:30 p.m. at The Flying Beaver (488 Parliament St., Toronto). There will be lots of comedy (so bring that box of Kleenex because you'll laugh till you cry) and also raffles.

This is definitely a great cause to let women know someone cares and will help them; as well, it's an opportunity to raise awareness about domestic abuse. To women going through this right now, please talk to someone (I wish I could reach out to every woman in this situation) .... and know there are people who will work with you to help you get your life back on track. Don't make excuses for why it's happening (it's not your fault) and don't be ashamed of the scars ... just talk to somebody and let them know you need help getting out of such an environment.

And a huge thank-you to everyone who has 'helped me help others'. I know one person can only do so much but a group of people can do way much more. ~ Gloria
